Gay Marriage to Begin in Connecticut Today
by Michael A. Jones
Wednesday, November 12 goes down in the history books in Connecticut, as starting today, same-sex couples are allowed to get married. Connecticut's recognition of gay marriage couldn't come at a better time, eight days after a heart-breaking vote in California that eliminated marriage rights for gays and lesbians in that state.
Last month, the Connecticut Supreme Court ruled 4-3 that the state's ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional, and ordered the state to recognize same-gender marriages. Connecticut now becomes the second state to legally recognize gay marriage, behind Massachusetts. And how is this for sweet and wonderful -- Peg Oliveira plans to marry her partner on the New Haven green today. How does she feel about finally being able to enter into a legally recognized marriage?
We're thrilled and we don't want to wait one minute...I want to show the folks who worked so hard to make this possible that we are very grateful and we don't want to wait any longer to be able to say the words 'We are married."
And because of Connecticut's ruling, Peg and Jennifer won't have to wait any longer.
