Gay Couple First To Marry In Latin America
11:07am UK, Tuesday December 29, 2009
David Williams, Sky News Online

Two Argentine men have defied national law to wed in Latin America's first same-sex marriage.
The couple were helped by a provincial governor who ignored a court ruling earlier this month which blocked their plans for marriage.
Alex Freyre, 39, and Jose Maria Di Bello, 41, were married in the southern Argentine city of Ushuaia in a small ceremony.
"We're extremely excited and happy about what this means for all gays and lesbians in Argentina," Mr Di Bello said.
"We weren't going to give up until we married," Mr Freyre added.
The men were granted a marriage licence by a judge in Buenos Aries in November which allowed the couple to wed in the capital.
It contradicts the national policy which continues to define marriage as between a man and a woman.
Mr Freyre and Mr Di Bello - who are both HIV positive - had planned to marry on December 1, World Aids Day.
But a federal judge overturned the wedding decision and ordered it suspended.
The couple travelled to Ushuaia in the province of Tierra del Fuego where they were given residency by the governor, who upheld the previous decision allowing them to marry.
Gay rights activist Claudio Morgado, who witnessed the ceremony, said the breakthrough had been possible "thanks to a long fight for our rights".
Argentina became the first Latin American country to allow civil unions by same-sex couples in 2002.
The unions grant homosexual couples some legal marital rights, but exclude others - including the right to adopt.

Thousands of Spanish Catholics march against abortion and gay marriage, By Edward Owen in Madrid, 28 Dec 2009
Tens of thousands of Spanish Catholics marched in Madrid against the socialist government's policies on abortion and gay marriage.
At a huge rally in the capital, Cardinal Antonio Rouco, the leader of Spain's Roman Catholics, told protesters the birth rate in Europe will be depleted unless Christian values are maintained.
Catholics attended a huge open air mass beside Real Madrid's Bernabeu stadium.
The mass marked the Feast of the Holy Family. But Catholic leaders from across Europe joined their local counterparts and members of the Spanish centre-Right opposition to castigate the socialist government's policies.
"Europe will be practically without children," warned Cardinal Rouco, 73, the conservative Archbishop of Madrid. "Who denies to defend a human being so innocent and weak, already conceived but not born, commits a grave violation of moral order."
José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, the prime minister, has introduced fast-track divorce and homosexual civil partnerships, while a controversial abortion law allows terminations on demand up to the 14th week og pregnancy, even without parental permission for 16 and 17-year-old girls.
A survey on religion in Spain, published just before Christmas by the newspaper Público, showed there has been a steady decline in those who describe themselves as Catholics in Spain - down almost four per cent to 26.2 per cent - and an increase in atheism.
Pope Benedict XVI sent a message of support to the rally, saying a family was "founded on the marriage between a man and a woman ... because it is of paramount importance for the present and the future of humanity".

DRAWING GENESIS.

Drawing Genesis'Drawing Genesis' is a saturated visual compendium which traces C. Graham Asmundson's performative gestures and visual residue. With the use of time lapse, still frames, lens obstruction, occult symbolism, subliminal imagery and blatant queer references; the film presents a ritual of artistic inspiration that invokes man's primal forces.
The soundtrack was created by converting a photoraph of one of the paintings to a MIDI music file using the program 'Sound of an Image'. This was subsequently fed into various synthesizers and sound programs and ultimately performed live by electronic artist, Cake Builder, adding a lush sound sigil to the frenetic magical imagery.
This film was created during the One Take Super 8 Event at the first annual WNDX Festival of Avant Garde & Underground Film.

Billboard Club Play Dance Chart.
Another Hit for Catholic Drag Queen
By Advocate.com Editors

Vincent Capretta, the priest who moonlights as a scantily clad drag queen named Big Mama Capretta, has another dance hit on his hands with "Candy Medicine."
Capretta's song — which, according to a press release, reached the top-selling spot on Masterbeat.com, a leading dance music retailer — isn't about party drugs.
"['Candy Medicine'] is all about having safe sex and using condoms — the condoms are candy medicine," Big Mama said in the press release. "The church is wrong and selfish to discourage the use of condoms. The use of condoms is not sinful, but rather an outward demonstration of virtue, respect, and moral responsibility."
While at night Capretta is big and blond, during the day she is Father Anthony, a.k.a., Vincent Capretta, a rector of the Community of Charity, an Independent Old Catholic Church in Columbus, Ohio, that describes itself as all-inclusive. This summer Capretta had a Top 20 U.S. Billboard Club Play Dance Chart hit with "Big Mama's House."

BROWN LIKE ME (2008).

Brown Like Me
Brown Like Me is a short documentary brought to you by the Alliance for South Asian AIDS Prevention (ASAAP)s Queer South Asian Youth (Q-SAY) project. This short film captures the experiences of 6 queer-identified South Asian youth living in the Greater Toronto Area who speak candidly about identity labels, homophobia, coming out, pride, resiliency, and family. Funding for this film was generously provided by Community One Foundation, an organization that actively supports individuals and groups working towards building and enhancing LGBTTIQQ2S* communities..
For audience members who are questioning their sexual orientation or gender identities, we hope this film makes you feel less alone in your journey of coming out and/or coming to terms with your multi-layered identity.
ASAAPs HIV-prevention team delivers ongoing workshops on HIV 101, Healthy Relationships, and Anti-homophobia to students in the public school system, community members and other service providers. This film will be used as a teaching tool when delivering agency workshops with the aim to bring visibility to queer identities within the South Asian community and challenge the tendency to disassociate from issues we assume dont affect us or dont exist in our families and communities. Recognizing the isolation and other social determinants of health of queer people is what inextricably ties queer services to broader HIV prevention and education.

Chinese government backs first official gay bar
By Adam Lake • December 21, 2009 - 10:01

China's first official gay bar has opened after a three-week delay sparked by intense media attention.
Opening on Saturday evening, the bar is situated in the tourist town of Dali in the southwestern province of Yunnan. It is the first venue of its kind to receive government backing.
The project, which was due to be opened on World AIDS day on December 1st, aims to provide help and support for the LGBT community as well as provide information on HIV/AIDS prevention.
Last year China's Ministry of Health implemented its first ever national programme to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS among gay men.
The programme marked a subtle new phase in the one-party-state's attitudes towards homosexuality since sodomy was decriminalised in 1997: No approval, no disapproval and no promotion.
The bar, which was founded by Dali HIV/AIDS charity worker Zhang Jianbo, was given 120,000 yuan (£10,000) of financial support from the government.
China's health ministry warned earlier this month that homosexual transmission of HIV/AIDS was gaining pace.
Gay sex accounted for just 0.4 percent of new infections in 2005, but that figure had risen to 3.3 per cent by 2007.
Of the estimated 700,000 Chinese people living with HIV or AIDS, 11 per cent contracted the virus through gay sex, according to Ministry of Health figures.
Zhang, a doctor at a hospital in Dali, said in an earlier interview that raising awareness of the disease among the gay community was "extremely important".
The official China Daily newspaper said in 2005 that the number of gays in China came to around 30 million, although it conceded few were willing to acknowledge their sexuality.
While homosexuality is still officially classified as a "mouldering life style of capitalism" in the officially communist state, there are no laws against gay sex or lifestyles. Neither are there any laws protecting Chinese gays from discrimination.

A FLORIDA ENCHANTMENT.

A Florida Enchantment
Three and a half minute condensation of the Vitagraph film "A Florida Enchantment", produced and directed by Sidney Drew, starring Sidney Drew, Edith Storey, and Jane Morrow.
The film was shot on location in Saint Augustine, Florida. The story is taken from the Archibald Clavering Gunter novel of the same name. It was the second Gunter novel Vitagraph adapted to the screen, the first being "Mr. Barnes of New York" with Maurice Costello. "A Florida Enchantment" was first shown at the Vitagraph Theatre on the 10th of August, 1914.
Although well remembered today, at the time it was critically panned and a commercial failure (in large part because, when filming began in April of 1914, it was expected to do well in Europe, but World War I broke out before it was ready for release and Vitagraph lost more than half of its market).

THE OMO PEOPLE.

Omo National Park is one of the National Parks of Ethiopia. Located in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Region on the west bank of the Omo River, the park covers approximately 4,068 square kilometers, about 870 kilometers southwest of Addis Ababa; across the Omo is the Mago National Park. Although an airstrip was recently built near the park headquarters on the Mui River, this park is not easily reachable; the Lonely Planet guide Ethiopia and Eritrea describes Omo National Park as "Ethiopia's most remote park."
The lower reaches of the Omo river were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980, after the discovery of the earliest known fossil fragments of Homo Sapiens that have been dated circa 195,000 years old.
There is virtually no tourist infrastructure within the park and little support for travellers. It was reported in 1999 that none of the tourist agencies within or outside Ethiopia would arrange tours in the park. The Walta Information Center announced 3 October 2006 that US$1 million had been allocated to construct "roads and recreational centres as well as various communication facilities" with the intent to attract more visitors.
The Mursi, Suri, Nyangatom, Dizi and Me'en are reported in danger of displacement and/or denial of access to their traditional grazing and agricultural land. This follows the demarcation of the Park boundaries in November 2005, and the recent management takeover of the Park by the Dutch African Parks Foundation (also known as African Parks Conservation). This process threatens to make the Omo people 'illegal squatters' on their own land.
There are reports that these tribal peoples have been coerced into signing documents they could not read by Park officials.
On October 2008 African Parks Network (APN) announced they were giving up the management of the Omo National Park and leaving Ethiopia. APN stated that sustainable management of the Ethiopian parks is incompatible with ‘the irresponsible way of living of some of the ethnic groups’. The organization has trouble dealing with the indigenous population trying to continue its traditional way of life within the park borders.

DC mayor signs gay marriage bill
By The Associated Press
12.18.2009 12:07pm EST

(Washington) The mayor of Washington has signed a bill legalizing gay marriage in the nation’s capital, but it won’t go into effect just yet.
Mayor Adrian M. Fenty signed the bill Friday in a public ceremony.
The city council passed the measure Tuesday to legalize same-sex marriage in the city. Congress has final say over D.C.’s laws, however, so the mayor’s signature doesn’t mean the bill immediately becomes law.
The bill must pass a 30-day period of Congressional review.
Supporters expect Congress won’t touch the law and that gay couples may be able to wed in the district as early as March. Opponents, however, plan to fight the bill.

Prosecutor Considers Lesbian Love to be Obscene
December 12, 2009
Bia News Center, Bawer Cakir

The Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation into the contents of the book "The 'L' State of Love" about love stories between lesbians because it allegedly deals with "unnatural relationships". Zeliþ Deniz from LambdaIstanbul criticized the repetitive pretence of "public morality".
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office initiated an investigation on the book "The 'L' State of Love" by Burcu Ersoy which was part of the "From Women to Women Story Contest" carried out by the Kaos Gay and Lesbian Cultural Research and Solidarity Association (Kaos GL).
The prosecutor's office reasoned the investigation by claiming that lesbianism is "an unnatural sexual relation" and "obscene".
Zelis Deniz, member of LambdaIstanbul, a Turkish LGBT organization advocating for LGBT people's human rights, objected to the given reason for the investigation: "In is unacceptable to consider and perceive lesbianism as "abnormal" in world that does not regard homosexuality as a disease".
"Erotic and pornographic publications for heterosexuals can be printed, but at the same time an investigation is initiated on a book telling love stories between women. This is nothing else but homophobia", Deniz added.
Publisher reacts to investigation
Irfan Sanci, owner of Sel Publishing where the book was published, announced on kaosgl.org, "The attempt of prosecuting our book for this reason is like ridiculing the the people's current state of mind".
The "From Women to Women Story Contest" was initiated by Kaos GL in the scope of the Meeting Against Homophobia organized for the 4th year. "The 'L' State of Love" was contributed by Burcu Ersoy and has been published at Sel Publishing in October this year.
In the investigation launched 10 weeks after the publication of the book, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office referred to a statement of publisher Sancý.
Sanci pointed out that the book was part of the story contest. He indicated, "There are no expressions in the book that remind of obscenity as defined by the law. On the contrary, it consists of naive stories of love between women with a literary concern". Sanci added that he does not agree with the prosecutor's findings.
The never-ending story of "public morality"
LamdaIstanbul member Deniz said that once more the "public morality" is put forward in the context of LGBT people in Turkey: "Discrimination against people who are not heterosexual arises again. We will experience this sort of investigations, the closure of associations and the confiscation of magazines if article 10 of the constitution on equality is not amended by including sexual orientation and gender identity".
Publisher Sanci is tried at the Istanbul 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance under the allegation of "spreading obscenity" regarding his publishing of the books "The Fairy's Pendulum" by Ben Mila, "The Amorous Exploits of a Young Rakehell" by Guillaume Apollinaire and "Letters of a Well-Mannered and Knowledgeable Bourgeois Women" by French writer P.V.
The Prime Ministry Board for the Protection of Children from Harmful Publications banned the novel "Third Class Women" by Anil Alacaoglu published by Minima Publishing. Saying that the book "harms children under the age of 18" the board decided for the sale and banned any advertisements regarding the book.

ΟΤΑΝ ΤΟ BBC ΡΩΤΑ: "SHOULD HOMOSEXUALS FACE EXECUTION?"

Αντιγράφω από την ιστοσελίδα του Guardian:
BBC news website asks users: 'Should homosexuals face execution?'
guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 16 December 2009 17.00 GMT
Stephen Brook

The BBC today asked users of its news website "Should homosexuals face execution?" on a talkboard discussion for a World Service programme for African listeners.
Posted on a BBC News premoderated talkboard, the thread was designed to provoke discussion ahead of the latest edition of interactive World Service programme Africa Have Your Say.
"Yes, we accept it is a stark and disturbing question, but this is the reality behind an anti-homosexuality bill being debated on Friday by the Ugandan parliament which would see some homosexual offences punishable by death," the post said.
The talkboard post asked users to send in their views to the programme, which goes out on the World Service and is also available online.
"Has Uganda gone too far? Should there be any level of legislation against homosexuality? Should homosexuals be protected by legislation as they are in South Africa? What would be the consequences of this bill to you? How will homosexual 'offences' be monitored?," the post added.
Premoderated posts included one from Chris, Guildford, posted at 8.59am, which attracted 51 recommendations of support. He wrote: "Totally agree. Ought to be imposed in the UK too, asap. Bring back some respectable family values. Why do we have to suffer 'gay pride' festivals? Would I be allowed to organise a 'straight pride' festival? No, thought as much!! If homosexuality is natural, as we are forced to believe, how can they sustain the species? I suggest all gays are put on a remote island somewhere and left for a generation - after which, theoretically there should be none left!"
Another, from Aaron in Freetown, said: "Bravo to the Ugandans for this wise decision, a bright step in eliminating this menace from your society. We hope other African nations will also follow your bold step."
The Africa Have Your Say programme aired at 4pm today. By 5.30pm, the headline of the discussion had been changed to "Should Uganda debate gay execution?".
Liliane Landor, the BBC World Service acting head of Africa region, defended the radio programme and talkboard post, saying it allowed gay men and lesbians from Uganda, whose voices have never been heard in the UK, to talk with dignity about the impact the legislation would have on their lives.
The show also included the opinion of those who supported the anti-homosexual legislation, including religious leaders, she said. "The programme was a dignified exchange between people who have differing beliefs," Landor added.
Landor said that the World Service realised that the headline on the talkboard was blunt, but it was carefully put in context. "We wanted to frame the question starkly, in order to reflect the stark reality of the Ugandan bill," she added.
The BBC Pride board, composed of gay and lesbian staff at the corporation, lobbied the World Service to change the headline and close discussion "to minimise negative reflection on the BBC".
Eric Joyce, the Labour MP for Falkirk, labelled the post "more than offensive". "It's completely unacceptable. And it's mainly British people replying," he said on Twitter.
The talkboard post is understood to have been written by a female member of the BBC World Service Africa bureau.
The World Service, which broadcasts in 32 languages on TV, radio and the web, is part of BBC Global News, but funded by the Foreign Office.

BBC apologises for 'Should gays be executed?' debate
By Jessica Geen • December 17, 2009 - 15:31

The director of the BBC World Service has apologised for the offence caused by a debate on its website yesterday asking readers to debate whether gays should be executed.
In a statement published on the BBC Editors' Blog today, Peter Horrocks apologised but added that it was a "legitimate and responsible attempt to support a challenging discussion".
The debate was on Uganda's proposed anti-gay bill, which could see gays and lesbians executed. A number of BBC online readers said the bill should be passed.
He wrote: "The original headline on our website was, in hindsight, too stark. We apologise for any offence it caused. But it's important that this does not detract from what is a crucial debate for Africans and the international community.
"The programme was a legitimate and responsible attempt to support a challenging discussion about proposed legislation that advocates the death penalty for those who undertake certain homosexual activities in Uganda – an important issue where the BBC can provide a platform for debate that otherwise would not exist across the continent and beyond."
One PinkNews.co.uk reader questioned why he had used the phrase "undertake certain homosexual activities", saying: "What? Like window dressing and hair styling?"
Horrocks also told the BBC World Service's Newshour programme today: "The main way in which people have responded to this is because the headline was extracted and circulated through social media and people responded to that. That is something quite new and its something we have to think quite carefully about, when things are taken out of context how do they seem," he said. "We need learn from that and that is the change were are seeing."
News of the debate quickly spread around Twitter yesterday afternoon, with readers asking whether the BBC would allow topics such as the extermination of Jews in World War II.
Yesterday afternoon, the BBC changed the question to 'Should Uganda debate gay execution?' after lobbying from BBC Pride, the state broadcaster's LGBT society.
The debate was raised by parliament by Labour MP Eric Joyce, while Liberal Democrat MP Lynne Featherstone called on the BBC to apologise.
The National Union of Journalists has also attacked the BBC.
At an emergency meeting of the World Service news and current affairs chapel of the union late yesterday, it issued a statement saying the post was "overly sensationalist" and could encourage homophobia.

Portugal Moves Toward Marriage
Posted on Advocate.com December 17, 2009
By Neal Broverman

The Roman Catholic nation of Portugal may soon become the sixth European country to legalize same-sex marriage.
A marriage equality proposal, supported by the majority party in parliament, is wending its way through the Socialist government, reports the Associated Press. If passed by parliament, which looks likely, the legislation will be sent to the nation's conservative president, Anibal Cavaco Silva (pictured) — if he vetoes the bill, parliament can override his decision.
The proposal will most likely be debated by lawmakers in January, and if passed, will allow gay marriages in April — just weeks before the pope arrives in Portugal for a four-day official visit.
Currently, Belgium, Holland, Norway, Spain, and Sweden allow gay marriage.

ANDY WARHOL - OUTER AND INNER SPACE (1965).

Outer and Inner Space
Filmed in two thirty-three minute b/w segments with Warhol's Norelco camera, the film focuses on actress Edie Sedgwick. The two segments were spliced together on two separate reels of film creating a split screen with four close ups of the actress. Two of the images show Sedgwick speaking spontaneously into the camera, while the other two are of her speaking to someone off-screen, commenting on watching herself on television.

ANDY WARHOL - MARIO BANANA 1 & 2 (1963).

Mario Banana 1 & 2
Andy Warhol.

Drag Queen Mario Montez (often credited as Maria Montez) lounges lazily. We she her from shoulder up including a stunning fur wig. She peels a banana and nibbles it seductively, often emulating oral copulation. The film lasts less than three minutes and Mario never finishes the banana. In 1964 this may have been nearly pornographic and obscene but by today's standards it is tame and seems fairly unimaginative

Jack Smith in
Batman/Dracula

Before Nolan, Before Burton, Before Adam West even, there was... Andy Warhol? A 2000 video projection/superimposition cutup experiment spraying Warhol images all over the walls. For Jack Smith - moldy but true. Set to a bit of vintage Sun Ra novelty entitled "Unmask the Batman" and an insane Texas pop song from one of Larry Buchanan's 60s 16mm AIP remakes.
Excerpt two - 2000 superimpositions and cutup projections of Andy Warhol and John Palmer's 1964 footage set to "The Nothing Song" by the Velvet Underground & Nico, Exploding Plastic Inevitable - Live '66. Hopefully they'll put out a bootleg series cd set of it, as this improv goes on three times as long and is gorgeous beyond belief.

ANDY WARHOL - EAT (1963).

Eat.
Eat (1963) is a 45-minute American film created by Andy Warhol.
Eat is filmed in black-and-white, has no soundtrack, and depicts fellow pop artist Robert Indiana engaged in the process of eating for the entire length of the film. The comestible being consumed is apparently a mushroom. Finally, notice is also taken of a brief appearance made by a cat.

ANDY WARHOL - KISS (1963).

Kiss - Andy Warhol (50 min).
Kiss is a series of 3 1/2 minute silent films of various people kissing. These short films are strung together to make a longer film. There is man & women kissing, women & women, man & man etc... Kiss is one of Warhol's first films, but can really call the completed work a film, or is it a series of short films. You see when trying to analyze Warhol's work, there is a mountain of films he created and the names associated to them are names given to differentiate reels of film, not neccesarely a title given to a complete and finished project. So is Kiss a film or is it a series of mini films? What is known is that Warhol compiled these short films and named it Kiss. Kiss is very much an extension of his silk screen artworks, you looking at Warhol's early film such as Empire, and Sleep, these films have repetitive images of someone sleeping and a static shot of the Empire state building, so one can say his silk screened artworks are very similar. The similarities are that they are the same images your watching, but with slight variations from one to the next. In this case Kiss is a fine example of Warhol's fascination with repetition. But only that, Kiss is NOT a underground masterpiece, but interesting because of the man who made it.

ANDY WARHOL - BLOW JOB (1964)

Blow Job.
In Andy Warhol's silent black-and-white movie, Blow Job (1964), a youth is filmed as he is apparently being given the sex act named in the title. The 35-minute film is accentuated by the paucity of expression on the actor's face: we see only his head and shoulders, rigidly framed so that all offscreen space has to be imagined, or avoided. Sometimes the young actor looks bored, sometimes as if he is thinking, sometimes as if he is aware of the camera, sometimes as if he is not. Like the protagonists of other Warhol films, he is apparently left to his own devices.
Warhol's 16mm films (including Blow Job, Sleep, Empire, and Henry Geldzahler), with their take on boredom, voyeurism, and the supposedly unmoving camera, continue to be influential today. In their own era of the early 1960s, they forced avant-garde film away from various forms of romantic illusionism and onto the reality of the specific film-as-projected. The film process itself became inseparable from the act of the viewer's viewing. In this extended examination of Blow Job, Peter Gidal deciphers the structures, abstract and concrete, of Warhol's crucial film. Warhol's techniques—the use of the close-up, the general use of camera movement, and the complete theatrical mise en scène—(especially when compared to the Godardian cinéma vérité of the time) make the materiality of the film process, its making and viewing, ineluctably present.

YIN AND YANG (2009).

Yin and Yang
This short film grew into an interactive audio/visual installation titled Unigenderse.
With various types of visual art, I intend to represent what I encounter, as well as present to my audience an interpretation of our surroundings. I have chosen perception as my focus. I use the mediums of digital video and photography, because of their malleability, which is also a characteristic of perception. I enjoy working with video because of its ability to incorporate both sound and image into a sensorial experience. I try to remind the viewer that things are not always what they seem. I believe that the trickery of such technology has begun to awaken us to this fact.
I observe and gather data, documenting and representing the worlds in which I find myself. Unigenderse examines the variability of gender roles by presenting excerpts of footage that I appropriated from feature films, television, and music videos. This interactive database shows obscured and/or switched gender, along with American feminine and masculine icons, from Marilyn Monroe to Arnold Schwarzenegger. I use the actors in such a way that they analyze themselves. I sorted and grouped these clips, according to stereotypical degrees of apparent gender and beauty. The purpose is to challenge the viewers' concepts of femininity and masculinity, while comparing the extreme Hollywood expressions to realistically unique or androgynous forms. Assorted audio clips of found dialogue correspond to the film's series of stereotypical images, while others question labels, prejudice, and identity. Representative of our culture, wall-mounted remote controls navigate the video and audio loops. The music wafting above represents Glam, Punk, New Wave, No Wave, and other Rock artists who have freed me to realize my totality.
I wish to show the natural unpredictability of human personae. I invite you to follow your path, observe your perception, and explore your gender universe. I believe that mysterious or otherwise "unconventional" appearances display the scientific fact that none of us are only one gender each. Therefore, taking on one lifelong binary tag in society is absurd. I suggest the concept that gender is fluid. Each human is both female and male, estrogen and testosterone, yin and yang, to varying degrees, at different times, by the year, day, or minute...

How it came about:
Kim Dallesandro: "So we went to Hunter's Hollow Studio in Echo Park after Usher asked would I (me!) sing this Velvet Underground classic. Mila Reynard came along to shoot some photos to record the event, Chris Schweska was there to sing the parts I wasn't doing and Aaron pretended we were all fantastic. At the end of it all Joeboy called the studio and did the end bit and off went the MP3 files across the ocean to France where they were mixed into this modern day version of a song we all know and sang"

Escape to Canada
By Matthew Hays, December 02, 2009

American lesbian soldier Skyler James was harassed in the military — and so she fled to Canada, where she is applying for refugee status. Now James tells her story to Advocate.com
Skyler James doesn’t hold back in her praise for Canada. “It’s awesome, I love this place,” she says. “It’s so much gayer than the U.S. OK, I take that back. It’s just a lot more open-minded.”
The 21-year-old lesbian has good reason to be happy. James fled the United States and her duties as a soldier in the American military in the fall of 2007 and arrived in Canada, broke. With the support of a Canadian peace group that supports American war resisters who want to remain in Canada, she applied for refugee status, citing homophobic discrimination as her reason for fleeing her native country.
James, born Bethany Smith, had her claim dismissed by a Canadian Immigration and Refugee Board earlier this year, but last month she won a reprieve, when she was granted a stay of deportation by a federal court, which also said she deserved another hearing with the board.
“My lawyer says this is very rare,” says James. “I’m thrilled that we have another chance to have my case heard. Going back to the U.S. will mean certain prison time for me.”
She says her troubles began almost immediately after joining the U.S. military. James, who comes from Wichita Falls, Texas, says her lower-income parents were eager for her to enlist. Worse, she says that recruiters — desperate to maximize their numbers — brazenly lied to her about what her obligations would be when and if she signed up. “They told me I’d never have to shoot a firearm and they said I’d never go anywhere near a war zone.”
But “I hated it right off the bat,” James recalls. “About six months in, someone saw me at a mall holding another woman’s hand. The Monday following, things got really bad. It was verbal abuse at first, 'There’s that lesbian!' Then it got worse. Eventually, on a daily basis, a soldier would actually pick me up and throw me to the ground. I often ended up with bruises.”
Which prompts the question, Why didn’t James file a complaint about such behavior? “There seemed to be no point. When a soldier would do it, a sergeant would be right there, doing nothing about it. I didn’t get the sense anyone was going to help me.”
Then things got even worse. James would find notes on her door daily, threatening physical violence. The final straw arrived in the form of a note in which someone threatened to break into James’s room at night and beat her to death while she was sleeping. “Given that I was suffering through abuse already, I had every reason to believe that whoever wrote the note meant it seriously.”
With two weeks until she would be deployed in Afghanistan, James and her fellow soldier Jeremy Daniel fled soon after she received that note, getting into a car and leaving the Fort Campbell military base in Kentucky. About an hour after leaving the base, James called a friend from a gas station and learned that the police were looking for her. She said she then felt like a “fugitive” and knew she had to escape. She and Daniel drove for 40 hours solid to the Canadian border, where they managed to cross without passports or birth certificates.
“The Canadian border authorities could see we were with the military, so they let us cross after seeing our military IDs. We told them we were just visiting for the weekend.”
They contacted an Ottawa-based war resisters’ group, who offered them shelter and legal advice. “I actually felt like I didn’t have much choice but to leave,” says James. “It had become so bad that I didn’t know who I would trust when I would be deployed. I was more scared of the guys who were supposed to be watching my back than the guys I was fighting against.”
As her case is before the courts, James has a work permit and is employed at a local call center. She says she’d ultimately like to get Canadian citizenship and go to college.
James has become something of a celebrity in Canada, interviewed by the gay press, on national TV, and in the daily newspapers, with most of the coverage being overwhelmingly supportive. (The Canadian military lifted the ban on gays and lesbians in the military over a decade ago.) Her friends had the first profile of her, in an Ottawa gay newspaper, framed for her.
James says she is heartened by the presidency of Barack Obama, and she certainly knows of his promise to end “don't ask, don't tell" and lift the ban on gays in the military. But she still views the situation as gloomy for American gays and lesbians wishing to serve in the military. “My lawyer put it well when she said that even if you change things in writing or on paper, it’s much harder to change the attitudes people have,” she says.
And she adds a few stern words of warning for young people who are considering signing up for U.S. military service, gay or straight. “Think very, very carefully before doing so. Be very wary of their promises of cheap education and travel opportunities — everything comes with a price, especially this job. I still can’t understand why my parents pushed me so hard to join — Americans are strange. I’m like, ‘What the fuck? Why would you want that for me?’”
James stays in touch with her family and has posted a video on YouTube offering support to soldiers in combat.
