MAD TV Bulgaria cancelled homophobic censorship.
Several weeks ago we received a signal from a MAD TV Bulgaria viewer. Our investigation confirmed that the popular music channel forces systematic discriminative censorship that affects all kinds of intimacy between male lovers in the music videos it airs. In the same time, the restrictions doesn’t apply expressions of love between a man and a woman, a woman and a woman, and even groups of people.
Some of the videos affected by the discriminative practice were Katy Perry’s “Firework” and P!nk’s “Raise Your Glass”. The tragic paradox with “Fireworks”’s censorship is that the video was conceived by its creators as a tool for fighting the exact same prejudice that MAD TV has been spreading through it.
Not only such practice could spread hate and homophobia throughout the heterosexual majority, but the consequences could be fatal for the self-esteem and even the life of many LGBT teenagers. We know that young gay people are up to 3 times more likely to commit suicide than their straight peers.
We are happy to announce that MAD TV’s management, represented by the Executive Director Plamen Markov, received our concerns very seriously and cancelled the discriminative censorship voluntarily. The channel replaced all currently aired censored videos with their original versions.
Marko Markov, a member of Youth Organization “LGBT Deystvie” welcomed MAD TV’s actions: “This is an important victory not only for the LGBT Bulgarians, but for the whole society which needs realistic representations of homosexuality in the media. Also, this positive outcome of this case sends a strong message to all media and businesses to be socially responsible and to respect the dignity of all of their customers.”
The same kind of homophobic censorship is still enforced by MAD TV Greece and MTV Greece, which fear sanctions by the extremely homophobic Greek National Council for Radio and Television. The Greek LGBT activists recently staged a kiss-in protest and created a video message to the censors.
