Transgender Activist Murdered in Turkey

Ebru Soykan, a prominent transgender rights activist, was murdered in front of her home in central Istanbul on Tuesday. The LGBT rights group Lambda Istanbul says that she had reported being beaten and threatened on several occasions by the same man now in police custody as the murder suspect.
Soykan, a leading figure in Lambda Istanbul, was the second member of the group to be murdered in the past year. Advocates attribute the violence in part to lack of legal protections and police inaction.
No legislation exists in Turkey to protect people based on sexual orientation or gender identity. While homosexuality is not illegal in the country, municipalities have used morality laws to discriminate against the LGBT community.

Για να βάζουμε και λίγο τα πράγματα in perspective. Αν και το συγκεκριμένο θα μπορούσε κάλλιστα να είχε συμβεί στην Ελλάδα (όπως και παντού εξάλλου).
Ναί, σωστά thomas, θα μπορούσε να έχει συμβεί και στην Ελλάδα. Και έχουν συμβεί στο παρελθόν δολοφονίες διαφυλικών ατόμων.
Εδώ όμως φαίνεται ότι πρόκειται για κάτι παραπάνω. Γιατί το θύμα ήταν και ακτιβίστρια, και μάλιστα η δεύτερη μέλος της Lambda Istanbul που πέφτει θύμα δολοφονίας.
Δεν μπορούμε βέβαια να ξέρουμε αν όντως συμβαίνει έτσι, αλλά τουλάχιστον η συντάκτρια του άρθρου έτσι αφήνει να εννοηθεί. Και αν είναι έτσι τότε το πράγμα είναι σοβαρό, ειδικά αν λάβει κανείς υπ' όψιν ότι οι αρχές της Κωνσταντινούπολης, έχουν κατ' επανάληψη προσπαθήσει να κλείσει την εν λόγω οργάνωση, με δικαιολογίες του στυλ "παραβιάζουν τα χρηστά ήθη".
