Artist Statement
The ability of humans to transform and their longing for transformation is basis of the picture series Swanlike. Transformation, the yearning to escape one's own skin and metamorphose into another being is an ancient longing deeply rooted in the human consciousness. It leads to various phenomena of "in-between-beings" which populate fairy tales, mythologies and the world of art, while real life leaves little room for the fulfillment of this desire. One of the few realms where transformation is possible--the world of transvestites--is presented several times in "Swanlike." I am fascinated by the aura which surrounds those humans who escape the so-called normal, who break out of the given exteriors. But I am also interested in the reactions and associations that are triggered in the viewer. Dealing with the risks of transformation can lead to more tolerance vis-a-vis the unconventional in our society today.
