THE DEATH OF EMILY DREHER (2006).

Brett: “I wrote the script a few years ago. It’s a circumstantial piece, the idea that a person born with all the necessary components for a successful life, being somehow left in the dust.
Through just an effortless collection of bad choices we see Emily fall apart. She falls in love with Sam, a young girl wandering through a “summer experience”. She’s this young flaky kid who wants to try something “edgy”, having no real idea of the damage that her actions bring to people. Sam’s “summer experience” turns into the only real feeling of love that Emily has ever felt.
I’ve always liked that notion of “love”. I think it’s such a capricious thing, nothing all to true about it really. There’s a beauty that comes from that sort of seclusion. When you have a circumstance of one person fully loving someone who just simply doesn’t love them back. I think there is something wonderful in that feeling, when love and hate and happiness and sorrow can all be present in the same reflection.
We feel sorry for Emily."
