GAY MUSLIMS (2006).

Gay Muslims (TV 2006)
49 min - Documentary

Gay Muslims (2006) is a Channel 4 documentary about how the experiences of five lesbian and gay Muslims challenge the heterosexual bias within their British communities and illustrate the diversity within Islam.
Background
Islam, as one of the Abrahamic religions, along with Judaism and Christianity, has sometimes been perceived to reject homosexuality. According to mainstream Islamic beliefs, God sent the prophet Lot to the people of Sodom to preach against their wicked practices and urge them to worship God. Among these practices (as mentioned in the Quran) engaged in by the people of Sodom were sexual acts performed out in the open. Hence, the word sodomite. The exact meaning of this passage has been taken as reference to varying activities. The Quran (Surah Al-'Ankabut> Verse 29) recounts what was preached to the Sodomites. "Do ye indeed approach men, and cut off the highway? And practise wickedness (even) in your councils?"
Diverse perspectives on homosexuality exist amongst new liberated Muslims, ranging from condemnation through to the Muslim Canadian Congress's welcome for legislation redefining marriage to include same-sex partners. In the documentary, a number of Islamic scholars assert that the Qur'anic verse, "we created you as partners", need not be limited to male-female couples. The documentary shows Muslim gay marriages (nikah) in the United States, Canada and India. It states that this diversity may lie at the heart of traditional Islamic practice. In the formation of the different Islamic schools of thought, which have now become different denominations, such as Maliki and Shafi, scholars accepted there could be different interpretations of Qur’anic Arabic and people could align themselves to whichever they felt represented them most. The documentary asserts that the modern-day call of the politico-religious right for a homogeneous Islam is a new invention, and not at all fundamental.
Scholar
The diverse ways of understanding of the Qur'an are echoed in the documentary by Dr Scott-Siraj Al-Haqq Kugle of Swarthmore College in the United States, currently a research fellow at Leiden University in the Netherlands. He believes that sharia – Islamic law – is determined by male jurists whose interpretations of Islamic texts are based on cultural assumptions situated in particular times, and particular political and geographical locations. Rather than sharia being divine, Kugle believes that it offers different avenues for Muslims to live their lives. He also points out that there is no word in the Qur'an for "gay" or "homosexual", and no mention of lesbians.
Activists
Some 200 lesbian and gay Muslims were contacted by the programme makers but only a handful were willing to be interviewed, and most of those insisted on keeping their identities hidden, to prevent reprisals. Only one was prepared to show his face and give his true name. He was Adnan Ali, an activist on issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual Muslims. Adnan described how, when he first came out in Pakistan, he was physically and verbally abused. He then came to the UK, where he chatted online with members of the American Al-Fatiha Foundation, an international organisation dedicated to Muslims who are LGBT or questioning, and their friends. Adnan then set up a sister group, now called Imaan.
Voices
The interviewees speak of their commitment to and belief in Islam, though they are mostly ostracised than their beliefs getting support by their community and family. ‘Razeem’ speaks of his pain at being denied access to the children of his previous marriage, despite having a legal right to access and the fact that his wife ran away with another man. He also wishes there were more role models, like Adnan Ali, for gay Muslims. ‘Shakir’ and his parents find it easier to accept lesbianism than gay men’s homosexuality. ‘Farah’ contemplates going back into the closet, to lie about her sexuality to ease the tension in her relationship with her parents.
The programme's presenter, Sonia Deol, says that the gay Muslim group Imaan supports the idea of "keeping sexuality a private matter".

PHOTO ESSAY: LIFE TRANSGENDERED.

Life Transgendered
By Lex Newman

I am an androgynous/transgender person. This means that I associate with the gender that is the opposite or different from my biological sex, and that I often think of myself as genderless. I have felt this way for more years than I was fully aware, and I am only now really coming to terms with it.
I have always been a different sort of person, but it wasnt until I was about sixteen or seventeen that I realized that I didnt not identify with my biological gender. I began to dress in a manner not connotative to either gender, and I started to act a little bit more like my opposite gender. People accepted that, and so it was okay. But I am afraid that if I tell them that I am not just a person who acts a bit like the opposite gender, but that I am transgender, that they will not accept that.
No one knows exactly what causes gender dysphoria (the medical term for being transgender), but I know that it doesnt matter exactly what causes it. What matters is that people like me feel safe and accepted in society, and I hope we can work toward that. I hope that some day in the near future I can reveal myself and feel safe about it. I hope that I can transition fully into the life that I want to live.

ΓΚΕΪ ΣΤΗΝ ΤΥΝΗΣΙΑ: "LE FIL / THE STRING" (2009).

Film explores being gay in Tunisia
By Jerina Messie(BTM French reporter/translator)

A film, set to be released on the 7 April 2010, has brought the topic of homosexuality back in the agenda in Tunisia.
The first feature film by Tunisia’s Mehdi ben Attia titled “Le Fil”, tackles the issue of homosexuality between men within a male chauvinistic society where men are supposed to be men and ancient traditions still rule.
Entirely shot in Tunisia, “Le Fil” was presented under the Tunisian National Selection, during the Festival du Film Francophone d’Angouleme (South West of France), on 26 to the 30 August 2009.

The film is about Malik, a young man from a rich Tunisian family who has spent many years overseas. As the only son, the death of his father brings him back in his home country. During his years overseas, he discovered his sexual orientation.
Now that he is back home, living with his mother, he wants to “get out of the closet” and tell her that he loves men. But unable to do so, he lies and just gets himself into deeper and deeper water until he falls in love with Bilal.
With his young lover, everything becomes possible; Malik breaks taboos, comes clean about his homosexuality and in the heat of Tunisian summer finds the happiness he has always desired.
The rest of the film contains all the ingredients that go with the discovery of ones homosexuality, attraction, love and revelations and what subsequently follow, arguments, social hypocrisies and lies.
Critics paid tribute to the performance of the main characters, the absence of modesty in sex scenes, which they said are very realistic and filmed with sensuality and concluded that it is a good story well put together and filmed.
However, they deplored the fact that like in many gay films homosexuality is presented as an “issue” affecting only middle and upper class people and is reduced to a complex relationship with one of the two parents or even both.

Can Tunisian gays be optimistic about the Jasmine Revolution?
Sébastien Letard - TÊTU
Cross-posted from LGBT Asylum News, February 1st, 2011
.

After 23 years of dictatorship, the Jasmine Revolution and the departure of President Ben Ali gave hope a wind of freedom in Tunisia.
As in most Arab countries, homosexuality is banned in Tunisia. Since 1913, the Tunisian Criminal Code punishes "sodomy between consenting adults" three years in prison, although in fact the gay community enjoys relative freedom.
Will the revolution improve things? TÊTU asked the Tunisian director Mehdi Ben Attia if he believes this wind of freedom will also benefit gays and lesbians in Tunisia.
TÊTU: In your film, "The Edge," released in May 2010, you wanted to show a happy homosexual. Do you consider that homosexuality is more accepted in Tunisia than in other Arab or Muslim countries?
Mehdi Ben Attia: Yes, it is a social fact relatively more visible and more accepted in Tunisia. However, there are laws. They are little used but they exist. And it is mostly the country that is conservative. For seven or eight years, I feel that there is an emerging gay scene. There are pockets of tolerance, first in the arts and culture, and in some cities. But for the rest of society, they are very frowned upon.
TÊTU: But then, what is tolerated? What is frowned upon?
Mehdi Ben Attia: The problem in Tunisia, as in Morocco, is taking the floor. Somehow we are told "Do what you want, but leave us in peace!" ... Two men living together, it does not shock. But they should claim nothing [about being gay]. Shut up! It's quite strange.
TÊTU: Do you think that eventually, the Jasmine Revolution could lead to more rights for Tunisian homosexuals?
Mehdi Ben Attia: Frankly, I want to be very careful. I never thought to attend current events [when] the Tunisian people rose up. ... I thought it would be with the Islamists. So I'm low profile. However, today I am optimistic. In the demonstrations, the main slogan was not "Allah Akbar!" Or "Bread!" But "job, freedom and national dignity!" It's very political. Do not tell stories, gay rights, nobody notices. But there is a strong demand for freedom, to breathe, against censorship. A favorable climate. For example, my film was banned in Tunisia. But I hope it will soon be released. That might be a good indicator of change.
TÊTU: You said, part of society is very conservative. There is also an Islamist party that is expected to return to the political scene. Is there not also a risk of regression?
Mehdi Ben Attia: Throughout my life, Tunisia has been a country without freedom. The reason given was the Islamist threat. We realized it was still good. So not! I hate this ideology, but they do not scare me. The mass of Tunisians is quite homophobic, either voluntarily or unconsciously, but we begin to see a pioneering pro-gay rights and more westernized. Do not forget that a tenth of Tunisians live in Europe. Where we take the habits of freedom that are reported in his luggage when going home.
It is a historic moment where you can borrow one way or another. The claims of freedom are strong in Tunis. One can imagine that after the gay rights movement in a Tunisian movida. But there may also be a mistrust of instability with the determination to find a strong man. In all cases we will never return to a regime like that of Ben Ali. All the fear accumulated in recent years has transformed into courage. So I'm cautiously optimistic.

GERTRUDE "MA" RAINEY IS SIGNING THE BLUES.

Rainey, Gertrude ("Ma") (1886-1939).
Short, fat and country to the core, Ma Rainey may not have appeared very impressive to someone passing her on the street. However, when she took the stage, dressed in one of her trademark sequined gowns and her necklace of gold coins, and began to belt out a song such as "See See Rider," Rainey captivated every audience that heard her.
In the process, she introduced them to one of the most powerful forces in American music--the blues.
Born Gertrude Pridgett in Columbus, Georgia on April 26, 1886, Rainey was initiated into show business by her family, who performed in minstrel shows. She first sang and danced for an audience when she was fourteen years old.
Two years later, in 1902, she heard her first blues song, in St. Louis, and made the warm, earthy rhythms a part of her style. In 1904, she married comedian and song-and-dance man Will Rainey. Since Will had long been billed as "Pa" Rainey in his act, it was only natural that Gertrude would be called "Ma" when she joined him, and the name stuck throughout her career.
Billed as "Ma and Pa Rainey and the Assassinators of the Blues," the Raineys played the Southern minstrel circuit for two decades with a show called the Rabbit Foot Minstrels.
Ma Rainey not only sang the blues, but also actually created them, blending the raw country sound of her youth with the more sophisticated urban music she heard on the circuit.
When Paramount Records signed her to a recording contract in 1923, she became virtually the first artist to record the blues, and the sound became identified with the powerful, gutsy voice of Ma Rainey.
Variously nicknamed "the Mother of the Blues," "the Paramount Wildcat," and "Madame Rainey," Rainey recorded over 100 songs for Paramount between 1923 and 1928. Her music, beloved for years across the South, had finally come North.
Accompanied by her "Georgia Band," which included such jazz greats as Louis Armstrong, Thomas Dorsey, and Coleman Hawkins, she belted out song after song with titles like "Rough and Tumble Blues," "Jealous Hearted Blues," and "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom Blues."
In spite of her marriage to "Pa," Rainey made no secret of her relationships with women. Indeed, her famous "Prove it on Me Blues," recorded in 1928, sounds more like the testimony of a lesbian than a bisexual:
Went out last night with a crowd of my friends,
They must have been women, 'cause I don't like no men.
Wear my clothes just like a fan, Talk to gals just like any old man
'Cause they say I do it, ain't nobody caught me,
Sure got to prove it on me.
Rainey was a close friend (and a friendly rival) with another bisexual blues singer, Bessie Smith. The Raineys had "discovered" Smith when their minstrel show passed through Smith's home state of Tennessee. Smith had joined the show, and many credit Ma Rainey as a major influence on Smith's career.
In fact, Smith bailed Rainey out of a Chicago jail in 1925, after police raided a women's party hosted by Rainey. There is no proof, but much suspicion, that Rainey and Smith were lovers.
Ma Rainey retired from performing in 1935 and moved back to Columbus. Unlike many of her contemporaries, Rainey had maintained control of her own career and her own money (the famous necklace of gold coins was one of her "savings accounts"); and when she retired, she owned her own house as well as two theaters, the Airdrome in Columbus and the Lyric in Rome, Georgia.
She operated the theaters herself up until her death on December 22, 1939 from a heart attack.

WILD WOMEN DON'T HAVE THE BLUES.

Wild Women Don't Have the Blues
58 minutes, 1989
Producer/Director: Christine Dall
------------
Wild Women Don't Have the Blues shows how the blues were born out of the economic and social transformation of African American life early in this century. It recaptures the lives and times of Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Ida Cox, Alberta Hunter, Ethel Waters and the other legendary women who made the blues a vital part of American culture. The film brings together for the first time dozens of rare, classic renditions of the early blues
What we call the blues can be traced back to the work songs of generations of Black fieldhands. Ma Rainey, "Mother of the Blues," first put this folk idiom on stage in 1902. Others, like Ida Cox and Bessie Smith, took songs like "Downhearted Blues" and "Jailhouse Blues" on the road with traveling vaudeville and minstrel shows.
The Blues performers provided cultural continuity for millions of blacks who migrated from the rural South to the industrial cities of the North during World War I. Mamie Smith broke new ground in the 1920s when she shouted out "Crazy Blues" - the first blues recording by a a black woman and one that opened up the recording industry to black artists. Bessie Smith brought black music to a national audience in the groundbreaking early "talkie" St. Louis Blues.
Survivors of the blues era remind us that celebrity status offered little protection against segregation and economic exploitation. Few of these women received much financial reward from their popularity.
With the Depression, American musical taste shifted towards the upbeat sounds of swing, and the classic blues died out. Yet as contemporary Chicago blues artist Koko Taylor reminds us, the blues and their legacy continue. "You get up in the morning and go to work and your boss tells you you been laid off. Your got the blues. Believe it or not, even the President's got the blues."

Αλήθεια, πως γεννήθηκε η ιδέα της ύπαρξης της accept στη Κύπρο; Στην Ευρώπη υπάρχουν κινήματα ομοφυλοφίλων; Ποια η σχέση σας με αυτά;
Πως «βλέπει» η κυπριακή κοινωνία τέτοιου είδους κινήματα; το αντέχει; Μήπως την φτάνετε στα όρια της;
Ποια η άποψη σας για το φαινόμενο Αλέκος Μοδινός και του ΑΚΟΚ;
Απ: Ο κ.
Για πιο λόγο να υπάρχει η accept όταν υπάρχει ήδη ένα άλλο, όπως είπατε, ενεργό κίνημα ομοφυλοφίλων;
Σε ποιο βαθμό η accept εμπλέκεται στην πολιτική σκηνή του τόπου. Αν για παράδειγμα η accept έμπαινε στη Βουλή θα ήταν διαφορετικά τα πράγματα; έχετε μετρήσει τα ποσοστά σας; Αν για παράδειγμα την ερχόμενη Κυριακή είχαμε εκλογές, τα μέλη σας και οι φίλοι σας θα ψήφιζαν- υποθετικά – Accept;
Τι αλλαγές θα πρέπει να γίνουν στην Κύπρο όσο αφορά τα δικαιώματα των Ομοφυλοφίλων; Οι κοινωνικές μεταβολές βοηθούν προς αυτές τις μεταρρυθμιστικές ανακατατάξεις και αλλαγές;
Πως μπορεί κάποιος να έρθει σε επαφή και να εμπλακεί ενεργά με την accept;
