Different from the Others
This presentation was produced in 1986 by PBS. Hosted by the late Vito Russo (activist/author-The Celluloid Closet), this landmark film fragment survives by an accident of history. In 1976, a western European Gay Rights group discovered it in East Berlin. Fourteen months after it opened in 1919, it was banned in Germany. Theatre audiences were subjected to stink bombs, hoards of mice released, and sometimes sniper fire, much of which was unleashed by the rising Nazi party. It stars Conrad Veidt, fresh from his sensational debut in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and best known for his iconic villain Heinrich Strasse in Casablanca. Note some rare exterior footage of the streets and parks of Berlin and the first onscreen representation of a Gay Bar in 1919. A must-see for anyone interested in Gay History.
