While most North American media outlets and activists have been focusing their energies on issues like same-sex marriage and gays in the military in the United States, award-winning Canadian film director, Rodrigue Jean, was documenting a slice of the almost forgotten subculture of men, both gay and straight, who exist in the ugly underbelly of Montreal's gay village. Men for Sale documents a year in the shocking and unsettling lives of 11 young sex-trade workers and recounts "their struggles to survive alcohol and drug-related addictions, abuse and stigmatization – and, their troubled pasts."
The film shows a level of human reality on which politics and activism scarcely play a role, and it reminds those of us who are more fortunate that our lives could be much worse.
