Love Exiled.
From Canadian filmmakers and real-life partners Roger Chin and Jim VanDeventer, Love Exiled represents a call to awareness that the type of injustice now present in California could also happen anywhere else. As Mr. Chin told GayVancouver.Net, "If a majority can revoke the rights of a minority, everybody should be concerned. Even the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms contains the 'Notwithstanding Clause' so it can happen here too."
The struggle for equality in one particular region can implicate hundreds, thousands, if not millions of people who live well beyond the geopolitical boundaries of any given city, state, or nation. While the future of California's Proposition 8 remains a mystery for now, films like Love Exiled remind us that although politics may sometimes appear to be confined to a local setting, equality is an issue of international concern.
If you're in the Vancouver area, Love Exiled premieres Saturday 21 August at 6:30 pm at the Empire Granville 7 Cinemas, as part of From Coast to Coast is Queer at the 2010 Vancouver Queer Film Festival.
