Filmmaker Q&A:
Q: What inspired you to make your film? Was there any specific reason you chose to make your film? How did you come up with the idea for your film?
David: I got the script from my producing partner, and I just loved the characters. It was also a part of life that I have never experienced before, it gave me the opportunity to investigate it.
Q: What do you hope to convey through your film?
David: I want to represent more mature and complex relationships because even though the coming-out stories are important, I feel that there is life after the closet. And I want to show that world. Ultimately, it's all about relationships and the universality of the human experience - that we don't want to get hurt or to hurt others by our actions.
Q: Who are your favorite filmmakers/What are a few of your favorite films and why?
David: It's got to be Steven Spielberg The Color Purple because it's, by far, a beautiful film all around, from directing, cinematography, writing to acting. It shows how film is capable of portraying different environments and human experience. And if done right, it can be amazing. That film represents great cinema to me.
Q: Any additional Information on the Film?
David: David and Edward Gunawan (producer, writer and star of Just) met just six months before collaborating on this project together. They first met at a West Hollywood bar and bonded over drinks. They have completed three shorts since then.
Also Just off with a different ending and title: It was originally Don't Ask, Don't Tell -- a ten-minute play that Edward Gunawan had written. It was adapted for film, and it originally ended with Clyde's boyfriend returning home and coming into the room, as Clyde and Wayne were embracing. We had shot it, but only during post-production did we make the changes to end the film earlier. The last word of that scene Just... then became the title.
