ΗΠΑ-Μέην: Σε δημοψήφισμα ο γάμος ομοφύλων;

Το όνειρο στο Μέην των ΗΠΑ, φαίνεται ότι δεν θα κρατήσει πολύ, καθώς η οργάνωση που αντιτίθεται στο δικαίωμα για τον γάμο ομοφύλων, Stand For Marriage, μάζεψε ήδη 100.000 υπογραφές ώστε να μπορέσει να το θέσει σε δημοψήφισμα τον Νοέμβριο (οι υπογραφές που χρειάζονταν ήταν 55.087).

Τώρα απλά θα πρέπει να ελεγχθούν οι υπογραφές ότι ανταποκρίνονται σε πραγματικά πρόσωπα και στην συνέχεια θα προχωρήσει η διαδικασία του δημοψηφίσματος. Αντιγράφω από το Advocate:

Maine Equality Opponents Gather 100K Names

Marriage Equality opponents in Maine have submitted petitions that include more than 100,000 signatures in support of a referendum against same-sex marriage.

The Associated Press reports that the signatures were collected by the Stand for Marriage campaign. Members of the group delivered boxes of paperwork to the secretary of state’s office. At least 55,087 of the signatures must be certified if the referendum is to be put on the ballot in November.

The Maine senate approved same-sex marriage in a 21-13 vote on May 6 and Democratic governor John Baldacci signed it into law within an hour.

Baldacci has not been an outspoken supporter of marriage equality, but he said in a statement following the signing, “I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage…

“[The new legislation] guarantees that Maine citizens will be treated equally under Maine’s civil marriage laws, and that is the responsibility of government.”

Είναι πέρα για πέρα θλιβερό θέματα που αφορούν τα ανθρώπινα δικαιώματα να μπαίνουν στην διαδικασία δημοψηφίσματος. Μάλλον κάπου εδώ, έχει έρθει η ώρα να αποδείξει ο Πρόεδρος Ομπάμα και η κυβέρνησή του, ότι τα λόγια του "θα είμαι φίλος, υποστηρικτής" κτλ κτλ, έχουν αντίκρυσμα στην πραγματικότητα.
