Synopsis
Toshio Matsumoto, experimental fiction, Japan 1969, 105’, in Japanese with English subtitles.
This dizzying and sardonic version of Sophocles' Oedipus set in modern Tokyo's gay milieu is a parodic and aesthetically delirious deconstruction of conventional, oppositional politics and a milestone of Japanese queer cinema.
1969, 105 min., 16mm, b&w. Written and directed by Toshio Matsumoto. With Peter, Yoshio Tsuchiya and Osamu Ogasawara. Print courtesy of The Japan Foundation with permission from Matsumoto Production.
Matsumoto’s debut for the legendary experimental film company “The Art Guild Theatre” is a cult classic with grandeur. Bara no Setsu consists of natural camerawork from the neo-realist tradition, masterfully combined with interviews from cast members whom Matsumoto picked from the street. Shot in the late 1960s, it delivers one of the first and still one of the most powerful film performances from a genuine drag queen. Bara no Setsu narrates the story of a charismatic drag queen haunted by a dark past. In avant-garde fashion, the film layers fictional narrative with documentary material, including fragments of student protests against the U.S. military force in Japan, images of young drug users, and experimental live performance on the street. This restored version of Bara no Setsu shows how remarkably fashionable and fresh this film still is 40 years after its release: a true masterpiece.
